Oil on canvas, 230x800 cm, 2019

The Comedy, Parody and Tragedy, Acrylic on canvas, 300x700 cm, 2018

Oil on canvas, 300x300 cm, 2019

By using strange stories and natural rhythms, the latest historical paintings series of Qin Qi depicts the heroism in human civilization and the the great power throughout human history, which reflects his pursuit of the sublime and a new aesthetic undertone.

Another participated artist, Rodel Tapaya, born in 1980, is one of the most influential artists in Philippines. By combing the unique mythical history and natural landscape of the Philippines with current social events, he creates a special space which contains different types of styles and factors.

As long as the audiences step in the exhibition area, Qin Qi's historical paintings and Rodel Tapaya's "Philippine flavor" works would instantly draw them into a carefully constructed world which is full of grand sense of history and exotic charm.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to those who offered help and support with making this exhibition come to life.

eavenly Bodies in the South

“Heavenly Bodies in the South” is a joint exhibition for Qin Qi and Rodel Tapaya. The title is a description of the subject matter in the two artists’ works, but it is also a metaphor for the exotic feeling and romantic imagination that permeates the exhibition.

Qin Qi represents a new mode of painting in China and, since 2013, he has re-defined the meaning of history painting through the fusion and application of multiple artistic styles and the adaptation of different stories. Exotic subjects and the grand tradition of Romanticism have come to characterize his work. A representative of artists born in the Philippines in the 1980s, Rodel Tapaya draws on the myths and legends of his country, finding power in folk tales and natural landscapes, responding to reality, and illuminating the circumstances and social affairs of the people of the Philippines using traditional stories.

The two artists draw on history and they both have a special interest in natural landscapes and local customs. They depict forests, oceans, mountains, rivers, lakes, animals, and plants, as well as heavenly bodies at night, fresh dew in the morning, or the sunny glow at dusk.

However, their versions of nature and history and their stories and forms take different paths through northern ice and snow and in southern sun showers. As a result, these heavenly bodies are exotic to one another, but they also symbolize another starry sky in reality, a never-before-seen universe removed from the present.

Today, these heavenly bodies meet in the south.
